Offsite Data Backup Services FAQ

Why do I need an online data backup service?

One of the most basic rules when using a computer is routinely backing up your files redundantly. Most users do not backup their files as often as they should and, even if they do, they do not store their data safely offsite. Offsite Data Backup Services eliminates the hassle of backing up because no additional hardware components are required as we supply the onsite backup unit as primary backup, and the added security of having your files backed up offsite to our secure facility. One of the biggest complaints of "Offsite" backups is that if your computer fails, how do you get to the "Offsite" to restore.  Duh!  Offsite Data Backup Services has eliminated this problem by having an OnSite Unit in combination with your Offsite Storage.  You can sleep better at night knowing all your data is properly protected.

What makes Offsite Data Backup Services better than other services?

Other services use a constant connection to their site in order to backup files.  There are several problems with this type of service.  First, there is a security issue of a constantly open connection over the Internet.  Additionally, this connection is usually unsecured.  It also creates a two way connection to your site for the people on the other end.  Is that what you want?  The second problem is that this type of connection also takes a lot of power from your computer and slows down your processing speed by up to 50%.  Offsite Data Backup Services makes secured connections and you only use the processing power when you are doing your backups and transfers.  Your data is safe and secure and your computer is not compromised by open connections and loss of processing power.  Additionally, Offsite Data Backup services is private, not using a "public cloud" for storage and we can be onsite to help you restore after a disaster.

 Is my data safe/secure?

Yes. Your data files are safe and secure at every step of the backup process due to state-of-the-art encryption and security methods. Only you can access your data through a random 128-468 bit key that you create and only you have in your possession.  If you loose the key, no one will be able to decrypt your data and it will be lost.  That is how powerful our system is!

At what point is the data available for restore?

The data is available for restore immediately after the online backup has completed.

Can I protect data on two different computers if I only have one Account?

You can backup as many computers as you like. The limiting factor is the onsite hardware and offsite storage.  If you have the need for a custom solution, feel free to email us in the sign up page and we will contact you to discuss your solution.

How often should I run my online backup?

Most users backup their data daily. If you have mission critical applications you may choose to back them up twice a day. Each “backup set” will have its own schedule. Most backup programs have the ability to perform online backups on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly schedule.

Is my data encrypted as it travels over the Internet?

Yes. All data is encrypted before it leaves your site, only you have the key.  Then your establish a VPN encrypted connection to our server to transmit the data.  Your data  is protected from start to finish.

What is USB 2.0?

Finalized in 2001, USB 2.0 is a complete overhaul to the Universal Serial Bus input/output bus protocol which allows much higher speeds than the older USB 1.1 standard did. USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. That rate is now called 'USB.' Though some manufacturers label their products Full-Speed USB. Note that this seems a bit deceptive. It's easy to mistake Full-Speed for Hi-Speed. You won't be fooled from now on as you now aware that Full Speed USB is only 12Mbits/second where Hi-Speed USB mode is capable of a much faster 480Mbits/second. As an aside, USB mice and keyboards need only 1.5Mbits/s to function. That performance level is also named 'USB' by the USB Promoter Group. To sum it up, USB 2.0 specification incorporates three speeds: Hi-Speed, Full-Speed and Low-Speed. You as a consumer don't need to figure out all the jargons. Just keep in mind that only 'Hi-Speed USB' and 'USB' host and devices exist.
